Pelmeni vs Pierogi

Pierogies are popular European dish (especially in Poland), frequently spelled as peirogy, pierogi, pyrogy, pyrohy, or perogi. They are pockets of dough that are filled with any imaginable filling. Traditional pierogies are usually filled with potato, cabbage, meat, spinach, cheese, fruits, or sauerkraut. In pelmeni, the filling is typically raw, but in pierogies it is pre-cooked. To cook pierogies, you have to place them into a pot of bottle and boil, bake them or fry them in butter. They can be served as dessert, entrée, appetizer, or snack. Traditionally, pierogies are served with sour cream. Some gourmands like to taste pierogies with mushroom sauces or different tomato. Dessert perogies (the ones that have fruit filling) can be served with icing sugar or even with ice cream.

Pelmeni is mainly Russian dish (as Russians invented them). Traditionally, they are filled with meat filling (pork, beef, lamb or mixing several kinds of meat) and have a thin dough made of flour, eggs, and water. The traditional pelmeni recipe requires 55% of beef and 45% of pork to make pelmeni filling. To make the filling tastier salt, pepper, onion, and garlic are added. When the dough and filling are ready, the pelmeni is boiled and served with a dollop of sour cream and butter (some people like to use butter instead of sour cream).
